Your New Favorite Summer Handheld: Arepa Bar at Keg & Case

It's July, and the heat in the Cities has settled in like an old friend on your couch—comfortable, but also taking up a lot of space. We're past the initial excitement of patio season and now we're just looking for good food that doesn't feel like a heavy commitment, something satisfying but maybe a little different from the usual burgers and brats.

That's where I want to talk about Arepa Bar, tucked away inside the vibrant Keg & Case Market on West 7th Street in St. Paul. This isn't one of those 'elevated' spots trying too hard to be fancy—it's just genuinely good, honest Venezuelan food that hits all the right notes for a casual summer meal.

The Heart of the Menu: Arepas and Empanadas

If you're new to Venezuelan cuisine, let's start with the basics. Arepas are essentially grilled cornmeal patties, crispy on the outside, tender and soft on the inside, sliced open and stuffed with all sorts of delicious fillings. Empanadas are deep-fried cornmeal turnovers, equally crispy, equally delightful. Arepa Bar does both exceptionally well, and honestly, you can't go wrong with either.

My go-to is always the Reina Pepiada arepa. It's a classic for a reason: shredded chicken mixed with creamy avocado and a touch of mayo. It sounds simple, but the flavors are so fresh and perfectly balanced. The richness of the avocado, the savory chicken—it’s just a truly comforting bite. For something a bit more robust, the Pabellón is a revelation. It’s got tender shredded beef, sweet plantains, black beans, and a sprinkle of cheese. It’s a symphony of textures and flavors, genuinely complex and deeply satisfying. You'll find yourself wondering how so much flavor can be packed into one handheld meal.

And then there are the empanadas. Oh, the empanadas! The cheese empanada, with its gooey, melty center, is pure simple joy. But if you’re feeling adventurous, try the Cazón—shredded shark meat. Yes, shark! It sounds wild, but it’s incredibly tender and flavorful, not at all what you might expect. It’s a bit of a unique find that you honestly won't see on many other menus around here.

Don't forget the sauces. They have a few house-made options, but the bright, zesty green cilantro sauce (often called guasacaca) is a must-try. It adds a fresh, tangy counterpoint to the richness of the fillings.

Price and Value: A Genuine Steal

In an age where it feels like everything is costing more for less—hello, shrinkflation, I see you—Arepa Bar offers genuinely good value. Arepas typically run about $10-$14, and empanadas are around $5-$7. For a meal that’s so satisfying, fresh, and bursting with flavor, that’s a very fair price point. You’re getting a generously stuffed arepa or a perfectly fried empanada that truly feels like a complete meal. I'd absolutely bring my mom here; she appreciates good food that doesn't break the bank.

The Keg & Case Vibe

Part of the charm of Arepa Bar is its location inside Keg & Case Market. This isn't just a place to grab food; it's an experience. The market itself is a beautifully repurposed space, a former brewery that now houses a collection of local food vendors, makers, and even a brewery and distillery. It’s bustling but not overwhelming, with plenty of seating options, both indoors and out.

In July, the outdoor patio at Keg & Case is lovely. You can grab your arepas and find a spot to soak up the sun, or retreat inside to the cool, open market hall. It’s a fantastic spot for a casual lunch, an early dinner, or even just a snack. While there are other vendors selling drinks, including alcohol, the focus at Arepa Bar is squarely on the incredible food. It’s a perfect spot if you’re looking for a fun outing where the deliciousness isn’t dependent on a cocktail.

Getting There and Parking

One of the best things about Keg & Case—and by extension, Arepa Bar—is the parking situation. They have a dedicated, free surface lot right there. Seriously, no street parking battles, no expensive ramps. It’s incredibly easy to pull in, park, and head straight inside. This is a huge win for anyone who appreciates convenience in the Twin Cities.

If you're taking transit, Metro Transit Route 74 runs right along West 7th Street with stops directly outside the market, making it very accessible. Biking is also a great option with bike lanes on West 7th. It’s genuinely an easy place to get to, no matter how you travel.

A Must-Try Summer Spot

Arepa Bar at Keg & Case is a genuine gem. It’s a place that serves up authentic, delicious food without any pretense. The flavors are bright and fresh, the textures are spot-on, and the value is honestly fantastic. It's the kind of spot your cousin who’s lived here forever would tell you about—the one that doesn't always make the 'top 10' lists but deserves all the love. Next time you're craving something different and genuinely satisfying this summer, make the trip to West 7th. You won't regret it.
