St. Paul's Secret River Valley: Hidden Falls & Humble Eats

It's July, and sometimes the city just feels like the city, you know? Heat, noise, crowded lakeshores. Sometimes you need a little escape without actually, you know, escaping. I've got a St. Paul gem that feels miles away, even though it's right here: Hidden Falls Regional Park.

This isn't your average city park. It's a proper river valley experience with trails, a waterfall (yes, a real one!), and plenty of quiet spots. Plus, we'll fuel up with some great, no-fuss food nearby. Pack your water bottle and let's go.

Part 1: Get Lost (The Good Kind) in Hidden Falls

Your main mission for the day: exploring the trails, finding the falls, and enjoying the Mississippi River. Hidden Falls Regional Park is part of the larger Crosby Farm Regional Park system, offering miles of paved and unpaved trails through lush woods right alongside the river.

What to Do:

  • Hike to the Falls: Follow the signs to the actual Hidden Falls. It's not Niagara, but it's a lovely cascade that feels like a genuine discovery in an urban setting. The trail is mostly flat and easy to navigate.
  • River Views: The park runs right along the Mississippi. There are plenty of spots to pause, watch for barges, or just listen to the water. Keep an eye out for interesting birds and river critters.
  • Tree Bathing: Seriously, the shade here is incredible on a hot July day. Just walk, breathe, and enjoy being surrounded by green.
  • Picnic Spot Hunting: Find a cozy bench or a grassy patch by the river to set up shop for lunch.

What to Bring:

  • Water: Stay hydrated, folks.
  • Good Shoes: Even on paved trails, you'll be walking a bit.
  • Bug Spray: It’s July, it’s a river valley. Don't skip this.
  • Sunscreen: For exposed areas, especially if you're lingering by the river.
  • A Backpack: For your picnic supplies, obviously.

The Details:

  • Location: Hidden Falls Regional Park, 1313 Hidden Falls Dr, St Paul, MN 55116
  • Hours: Daily, 6:00 AM - 11:00 PM
  • Cost: Free!
  • Website: St. Paul Parks and Recreation (search 'Hidden Falls Regional Park')

Getting There:

  • Driving: There are several free parking lots within the park, accessible off Mississippi River Boulevard. They can fill up on peak weekend afternoons, so aim for earlier.
  • Bus: Take Metro Transit Route 54 or Route 74. Route 54 stops near Mississippi River Boulevard and Crosby Farm Road, which requires about a 15-20 minute walk into the heart of the park. Route 74 stops further west on Dodd Road, requiring a longer walk or a bike connection. Check Metro Transit's site for the best current stop.
  • Biking: This is a fantastic bike destination! The Sam Morgan Regional Trail runs directly through the park and connects to the extensive Mississippi River Trail system. It's a beautiful, mostly flat ride.
  • Walking: If you're coming from the surrounding Highland Park or Macalester-Groveland neighborhoods, it's a decent walk, depending on your starting point. Plan for at least 30-45 minutes to reach the main trails.

Part 2: Fuel Up (Picnic Style) at Mississippi Market Co-op

After all that fresh air and exploring, you'll be ready for some serious refueling. Instead of a sit-down restaurant, we're going for a practical, delicious, and budget-friendly picnic from a local favorite: Mississippi Market Co-op.

Their Snelling Avenue location is perfectly situated for grabbing supplies before or after your park adventure.

What to Grab:

  • Deli Counter Delights: They have an excellent selection of pre-made sandwiches, wraps, and salads. My go-to is usually whatever seasonal salad looks freshest.
  • Hot Bar Options: Often, they'll have a hot bar with soups, chili, or other rotating dishes if you're looking for something warm.
  • Snacks Galore: Fresh fruit, granola bars, local chips, and a huge selection of beverages.
  • Bakery Treats: Don't forget something sweet! Their bakery section has solid cookies and pastries.

The Details:

  • Location: Mississippi Market Co-op (Snelling location), 1500 W 7th St, St Paul, MN 55102
  • Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM (check their website for current holiday hours)
  • Price Range: $$ (You can make it $ if you stick to a simple sandwich, but quality ingredients mean it's not fast-food cheap.)
  • Website: Search 'Mississippi Market Co-op'

Getting There:

  • Driving: Free parking lot available.
  • Bus: Metro Transit Route 54 stops right outside. Very convenient.
  • Biking: Snelling Avenue has bike lanes, making it accessible from other parts of the city and connecting to the river trails if you're making a loop.
  • Walking: Very walkable from Highland Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. It's about a 20-30 minute walk from the main entrance of Hidden Falls Park along Mississippi River Boulevard and West 7th Street.

The Damage (Cost Breakdown):

  • Hidden Falls Park: Free!
  • Picnic at Mississippi Market: Expect to spend $10-$20 per person for a good sandwich/salad, a drink, and a snack. You can keep it closer to $10 if you're mindful.
  • Transit: $2.50 per ride on Metro Transit (or $5 for an all-day pass if you're taking multiple buses). Biking/walking is free.
  • Total: You can do this whole day for less than $25 per person, easily.

Skip this if:

  • You absolutely hate walking on unpaved trails (there are paved options, but the best bits are a little rugged).
  • You're looking for an adrenaline rush (this is more about chill nature vibes).
  • You prefer fancy sit-down meals for every outing (we're going for delicious and practical here).

There you have it: a perfect July day trip into St. Paul's wild side, complete with fresh air, a lovely waterfall, and good eats, all without needing a car or breaking the bank. Enjoy the river!
